Constipation is making good money and also killing us. 30 secs you must spare for this

September 6, 2016

Glamour was not the thing that earned ₹141 crore (US$21 million) for the movie Piku. 14% of India's urban population (may be the numbers are lesser than actual) was found to be suffering from constipation which is higher than the world average of 12%. Huge target audience for Bollywood.

Constipation can give a huge vote bank for our politicians. Imagine politicians blaming each other for the constipated population of India. And we all can guess who the front runner would be. Lols. (You are free to send in some jokes here too!)

Being constipated means your bowel movements are difficult or happen less often than normal. Almost everyone has it at some point in life, and it's usually not serious. Even short periods of constipation can definitely make us anxious, depressed and irritated. Remember your travel when you were constipated, how did you feel?

It is because the gut also known as the second brain contains some 100 million neurons, more than in either the spinal cord or the peripheral nervous system.
Brain is so attached to the digestive system that changes in mood can also affect the passage of food in the gastrointestinal tract.

Constipation often coexists with depression.

Complications that can arise from constipation include

  1. Hemorrhoids-Straining to pass stool may lead to hemorrhoids.

  2. Anal fissures

  3. Rectal prolapse

  4. Encopresis- soft stool from the small intestine bypasses the mass of impacted fecal matter in the colon

  5. Fecal impaction- large lump of dry, hard stool that remains stuck in the rectum

  6. Colorectal Cancer- patients with chronicconstipation were found to be at increased risk of developing colorectal cancer and benign neoplasms.

Constipation is a big opportunity for the medical industry. In reality it is like a hidden pot of gold. Lols. From enemas and suppositories to resection and surgeries everything is a money making machine.

Even homeopathy, ayurveda, yoga and all naturopathic practitioners are also mining gold in there.

Why Does It Happen?

  1. Antacid medicines containing calcium or aluminum

  2. Changes in your usual diet or activities

  3. Colon cancer

  4. Eating a lot of dairy products

  5. Eating disorders

  6. Irritable bowel syndrome

  7. Neurological conditions such as Parkinson's disease or multiple sclerosis

  8. Not being active

  9. Not enough water or fiber in your diet

  10. Overuse of laxatives (Over time, this weakens the bowel muscles)

  11. Pregnancy

  12. Problems with the nerves and muscles in the digestive system

  13. Resisting the urge to have a bowel movement, which some people do because of hemorrhoids

  14. Some medications (especially strong pain drugs such as narcotics, antidepressants, or iron pills)

  15. Stress

  16. Under active thyroid (hypothyroidism)

  17. Hormonal disturbances

  18. Constipation can further lead to constipation. Ironical but true.

What Should I Do If I Am Constipated?

Try these steps: (if they don't work, then you need to undergo some customized therapies as your condition requires).

  1. Increase your intake of water especially warm water. (Unless you are advised not to)

  2. Add fruits and vegetables to your diet.

  3. Eat whole grains, cereals, pulses.

  4. Some people use a very mild over-the-counter stool softener. (I personally dont recommend).

  5. For those who use laxatives - Laxative overuse can worsen your symptoms.

For severe cases there are customized therapies in diet which needs to be performed.

I have personally treated people of severe constipation and suffering from depression, hemorrhoids etc by such therapies. Such patients do not get any relief by allopathic or any other non conventional treatments. It is heartbreaking to see then suffer so much.

These therapies include cleansing of the gut, anti fungal diet, replacement of gut bacteria etc.

Constipation can get deadly and its foolish to wait for that to happen. Take control of your health.

You can't blame the prime minister for your constipation.
