Dengue Fighting Tips & Surprisingly, Mosquito is the Most Important Species Today.

September 28, 2017

These mosquitoes which can be controlled by God alone carry viruses and germs which cause deadly illnesses like Malaria, Dengue etc. If we want to control mosquitoes and the diseases they cause, we must resort to better practices and look after nature as it looks after us.

Mosquitoes also makes us realize about the Power of a single entity

In the last 1 week I have received multiple calls every day with the news of dengue outbreak and asking for tips. I am writing this blog to help people fight Dengue. Please share and spread the message.

Case 1

Some cases were very serious like a lady of 65 years from Mumbai, highly diabetic was admitted in the ICU for severe dengue infection. A week after advising I called to check how was she? It was a very serious case and no one was sure about what would happen. I was told that she was discharged and is fine now and they couldn’t call me back because other members of the family were hospitalized.

First some basic stats about Dengue followed by the remedy

Caused by a family of viruses that are transmitted by mosquitoes, Dengue is common in more than 110 countries and kills approximately 10,000 to 20,000 People while infecting 50 to 528 million people annually.

"Breakbone Fever" as Dengue is popularly known, has characteristic symptoms of muscle and joint pains along with the ‘”Dengue Triad” which is sudden onset of fever, headache (typically behind the eyes) and rash.

A life-threatening condition sometimes develops known as the Dengue Haemorrhagic Fever, resulting in low levels of blood platelets and blood plasma leakage which leads to bleeding. This condition, Dengue Shock Syndrome, where dangerously low blood pressure occurs is more common among children under 10 years of age.

Imagine the ratio where 528 million people are infected by Dengue and 527.998 million survive could be achieved by a drug, it would be labelled a miracle drug with revenues in Billions of Dollars ($ $ $).

But the sad fact is that even 20,000 deaths from Dengue are unwanted and can be simply avoided by taking the right steps at the right time.

The Possible Medications in Dengue

Since Dengue is a Viral fever, it has no specific medicine or antibiotic to treat it. All the treatments are directed towards symptoms. The only way to recover is to support the body and the immune system. This is also a classic example which proves that natural methods are powerful in healing the body.

Some medicines are given to treat symptoms like fever and also intravenous fluids (maximum 2 days) to maintain the fluid balance in the body. In children with shock due to dengue a rapid dose of 20mL/kg is reasonable. These are important and good for dengue patients. Make sure to avoid drugs which make sthe blood thin as they can increase the chance of bleeding.

Dengue Patient with health problems or "warning signs" should be cared for in hospital & with access to an intensive care unit (ICU).

Those who are able to drink, are passing urine, have no "warning signs" and are otherwise healthy can be managed at home with daily follow up and oral rehydration therapy.

Tips to fight Dengue and defeat it
  • Papaya leaf juice (little quantity at a time) and make the patient lick some salt after drinking it so that the vomiting tendency reduces.

  • Mint and coriander juice

  • Wheat Grass, Barley Grass, Neem Leaves, Holy Basil (Tulsi) Leaves, all green leafy vegetables should be drunk in maximum quantity and preferably in juice form.

The Green Leafy Vegetables are a great source of Vitamin K (precursors/ like compounds). Vitamin K gets its name from Koagulation Factor because it is very important for coagulation of wounds and bones. Deficiency of Vit K can lead to bleeding and other bone problems like Osteoporosis. Dengue patients have low platelet count. Platelets are cells which are responsible for coagulation of wounds. Low Platelet count in Dengue patient is a risk factor which can lead to bleeding and death. The green help the body to get a lot of Vitamin K which supports the coagulation of wounds in dengue patients. Kiwi Fruit is a rich source of Vitamin K as well.

Now you know why papaya leaf juice and kiwi are recommended for Dengue patients.

  • Kiwi Fruit

  • Fruit juices should be given with the pulp. I advise not to drink a lot of fruit juices. The quantity depends on the condition of the patient. If diabetic or overweight, avoid or give very little fruit juices. For Children or weak patient, give them a little more. It is advisable to eat the fruit rather than drinking the juice.

  • Lime juice – Lime, water and salt. Please do not add sugar. Lime juice can be given in higher quantities like 5-6 glasses. Vitamin C boosts immunity while sugar suppresses the immune system. You can include other citrus fruits like Gooseberries for more health benefits.

Sugar (Table Sugar, refined carbohydrates like white polished rice, maida, processed and packaged foods etc) has been found to reduce the functioning of the immune system (especially Neutrophils). On the other hand, Vitamin C is an immune booster.

  • Goat milk (if you can get it)

  • Turmeric and Black Pepper - Mix half tea spoon of turmeric and a pinch of black pepper in water and drink it. Repeat several times a day. You may add salt and lime to taste.

  • Coconut milk

  • Coconut water

  • Buttermilk only salted

  • Almond milk

  • Vegetables soaked water

  • Dhal water

  • Salads/ steamed vegetables

  • Vegetable soups

  • Green tea

  • Carrot juice with pulp

  • Sunbathing boosts immunity but make sure you don’t get dehydrated.

  • Water – I suggest you to avoid RO water. Instead you can use any of the above or add some salt/ herbs to it. Alternatively it will be best to get mineral water like the “Bisleri” brand mineral water.

About 7-8 litres of liquid and healthy food would be ideal for a dengue patient. If you are unable to pass urine, contact a doctor immediately.

The basic idea in case of dengue is to maintain proper fluid balance and boost our immunity.

Case 2

Some reports of a small boy who was severely affected by dengue in Hyderabad. When he was admitted they checked his Platelets level to be around 17000 (Range is 1.5 lacs to 4 lacs). Could not get those reports from the emergency room though.

Along with intravenous fluids, he followed the above advice. His platelets shot up to 4.5 lacs in a week and the doctor jokingly said "Stop whatever treatment, diet you are giving. Platelets have become more than it should be." With God's grace, he absolutely fine now.
